Summer Camp registration now open!
The "Scout Year" matches the school year, with Scouts starting in August and finishing in May. During the Scout year the pack has multiple types of events:
Monthly pack meetings (all Scouts): The "Pack" is all the Scouts in Pack 296, from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Pack 296 has monthly pack meetings.
Weekend events (all Scouts, optional): The pack adults organize weekend events throughout the year, including campouts, monthly hikes, service projects like Scouting for Food, outings like ice skating, and events like the Pinewood Derby. These events are typically optional, but sometimes can be used to complete adventure requirements.
Monthly den meetings (single grade): "Dens" are Scouts in a particular grade, identified by their "Rank". Each den is also given a unique number, which they keep even as they move from grade to grade. Each den meets once per month, separate from the pack, and work on Adventures that are described in the Cub Scout handbook.
Finally, by registering with Cub Scouts there are additional opportunities to participate in events like summer camp, district organized archery, bb-gun, and slingshot events, and district organized camping weekends. Finally, the pack organizes occasional summer outings.
Pack meetings are once a month meetings where all Scouts in the pack (K-5) gather. Pack 296 has pack meetings the first Wednesday of each month from 6:30-8pm at Joaquin Miller Community Center.
Each pack meeting is different, but all include time for a fun game or activity plus time for learning new skills. Past pack meetings include:
Games and Activities: Playing a "Scout skills relay" game to teach camping skills, going on a short hike followed by a campfire program, building a weather vane, doing the "marshmallow challenge", and more.
Guests visitors - Having a doctor visit the pack and go over basic first aid, and then Scouts assemble personal first aid kits. We've also had elected officials, disabled community members, first responders, scientists, and others visit us.
Special Events: Our February or March meeting is our annual Blue & Gold Dinner celebrating the anniversary of Scouts. In May we have our Crossing Over event where we celebrate Scouts who completed their required adventures to earn their rank, as well as Scouts graduating from Cub Scouts.
Pinewood Derby!
During the year we have 1-2 events each month that fall on weekends. Below are some of the types of events we do in a typical year. To see more details, please check out our pack calendar.
Pack Campouts (Fall and Spring) - The pack adults organize a campout each fall and spring, where each family sets up their own tent but everyone contributes to cooking meals and helping out. All campouts of course include a campfire with s'mores and songs!
Monthly "Hikes" - These are typically gentle outdoor walks that happen at 10am on the Saturday following the monthly pack meeting, at a different location each time.
Scouting for Food - This is our November service project where Scouts distribute flyers to area households, then collect canned and boxed goods for donation.
Ice Skating + Toy Drive - A December tradition where we go ice skating as a pack, and also gather toys for donation.
Pinewood Derby - Typically in January or February, this is an exciting event where each Scout builds and decorates a small wooden car from a kit, and we have a contest to see who is the fastest and which are the best decorated.
Summer Activities such as an outdoor movie night, a group bike ride, or a fishing trip.
Each year is different, and so we also add additional one-time events where we can (e.g., special eclipse viewing walk in 2023).
Den meetings are once a month meetings where only the Scouts in a single den meet. During den meetings, Scouts work on Cub Scout Adventures.
Each den has a slightly different meeting schedule. Here are the planned dens for 2024-25, and their typical meeting date and time each month. Many dens meet at Joaquin Miller Community Center (JMCC), while others meet at homes or other locations.
